imaginary softwoods - "the path of spectrolite" lp (amethyst sunset) $13.00
The Path of Spectrolite is the latest full length recording from Imaginary Softwoods. Early comments have praised this album and state
that while this recording retains some if the icy drone sound from some previous Softwoods release, this is a great progression and a
bit more active. An extremely beautiful album entirely of sounds created by synthesizer and voice, this is an essential piece of the
Imaginary Softwoods discography that you are sure to love. Pressed in an edition of 535. 150 on a clear / white mix and the remaining
385 on clear . "the path of spectrolite" has been repressed. an additional 200 on clear and 100 clear / white mix copies.

providien - "followed by a wraith" lp (amethyst sunset) $13.00
“the midwest is a real shangri-la for bohemia basement bleakness so it’s not real surprising that loner tape grime duo providien hail from the snow-blasted state of ohio, and have a grim grassroots aura that just feels right. led by sword heaven electrician mark van fleet and partner-in-crime/childhood friend nathan reynolds (also of weirdo goths american jobs), providien’s debut, “followed by a wraith”, sprawls from disembodied horror atmospherics to no-fi sludge death marches to pure weirdo home-taper acoustic guitar meltdowns, each new zone more unsettling and brainwashed than the last. has elements of mammal (especially the recent drone-suicide ballads), the shadow ring (just replace all the british stuff with raw american sloth), and various other esoteric cassette miserablists, but that’s just a roundabout way of saying this shit rules.”
- britt brown
the lp is limited to 200 copies on black vinyl with a paste on artwork.
all copies come with an insert included with album info and tracklist printed on cardstock or transparency.

sean mccann - "mammoth mountain" 2xcs (avant archive) $10.00
sean mccann literally needs no introduction. if you're reading this promotional paragraph, you already know who sean is and there is a good chance you're already convinced of his musical capacity. sean's specialty seems to be this airy and sweet 'atmosphere', something that sounds simultaneously like a slow-motion stringed dirge and an accompaniment to your morning's reflection over a pot of steaming coffee. with mammoth mountain, sean is in a unique form. these songs are short and rambling, and they present mccann in a kind of sparse orchestration. there is very little 'constant' drone that frequently appears on his records. mammoth mountain is space-specific, recorded during a series of family outings over two years, and the compositions on these two volumes are apropos of the space. the sparseness with which the songs are written and played (or improvised) allows the mountain air to permeate the tape. the overall effect is just what one might expect from sean mccann: a tender set that almost insists on the transportation to or envisioning of mammoth mountain and its surrounding beauties. this album is sometimes fun, sometimes discordant, and sometimes entirely disarming, much like the wild spaces from whence it was derived. sip a cool stream and join sean for a stringed jaunt up the mountain.

emuul - "waiting for winter" cs (avaint archive) $5.00 emuul's kyle iman is a quiet champion of quietness. his works to date have exhibited this kind of subtle presence wherein time slows down a little and reference points are not easily set. often working with synthesizers, some of emuul's most effective pieces have been those in which the least movement occurs. on waiting for winter, iman eschews his synthesizers in favor of the electric guitar and some variation on his synthetic stasis. this album's side-long introduction, "blurring the nights" is a terrifically dynamic piece that stretches from the quiet guitar hum you might recognize into a frantic sonic mantra, culminating in the integration of some expert guest drumming. on the b-side kyle airs it out a bit with four short pieces that set more somber moods. naturally driven guitars are dipped in equal parts delay and reverb. with these airs, emuul returns to the kind of stasis that you might have recognized from his past excursions, but perhaps these are his most successful pieces yet. not only do they captivate and affect the slowing of time, they're also incredibly sweet and natural sounding, fully identifiable and earnest. here is simply a man playing guitar simply, with no shroud of mystery or murk. waiting for winter is a guitar album and it demonstrates that the success of this musician comes from him, not his tools.

ajilvsga - "massacre canyon" double cs (avant archive) $10.00
if you've been hanging around the tiny experimental voids that have been surfacing in north america over the past five-or-so years, there is some chance that you've brushed up against the rolling thunderhead called ajilvsga. the duo's body of work is massive, and so even though it's only a glimpse, massacre canyon is nonetheless a necessary document in the evolution of this musical icon. this soaring double-cassette collects tracks from ajilvsga's past—some pieces more ephemeral than others, but everything worthy of a second (or tenth) glance. what these selections have in common is only a certain ability to succinctly (as much as one can, given the nature of the music, both in density and in length) define this oklahoman tag-team's oeuvre: an animal darkness, tainted with imagery both accusatory and mournful. through their own multitude of sonic approaches, may you find ajilvsga's essence living in the spaces of massacre canyon. alas, it's not the end: side d contains 40 minutes of new music. onward!

excavacations - "afternoon future" cs (avant archive) $6.00
pop music isn't what it used to be. excavacations know this as well as anyone, and you'll know it too when you find yourself tapping your foot suddenly after emerging from a murky fog of sustained guitars and synthesizers. chad parsons & nicholas longworth's increasingly signature stamp onto the musical underground is unmistakably playful, but don't miss the signposts pointing back in time, and (it hardly bears mentioning) don't miss the caverns of solemnity from which their lighter sensibilities emerge. these two musicians have been feeding on the morsels that popular rock & roll has left behind, and washing it down with a swig of experimental electronics and a gulp of musique concrete. their knowledge shows through when suddenly we find ourselves at that point where we want to hit rewind and hear that unforseen verse repeated yet again. when you find yourself frustrated that the last verse was indeed the last verse, take some consolation and rest in the longer stretches of abstraction, and keep in mind that excavacations just might come back with another verse or two. how soon? keep listening.

viking jews / smycken - "split" lp (release the bats) $21.00
hailing from gothenburg, viking jews is the brainchild of hannes norrvide (also a member of bleak rascal duo lust for youth), which after a few selfreleased cassettes here offers up 20 shimmering minutes for his vinyl debut. melancholic and rhythmic stuff melted through cheap keyboards, distinguished vocals and some serious cassette-flippin', somewhat covered under layers of dust, delay and piles of trashed skateboard decks. twisted west coast ambience and scandinavian heat all over. think of monopoly child star searchers, early dolphins into the future and innercity and maybe you are halfways. all new material, except the inclusion of the beautiful ambient-closer from the boneless cassette which we just couldn't resist to put on vinyl.
smycken resides in gothenburg/malmö/copenhagen and consists of rasmus svensson and hanna nilsson. just as with viking jews, this is the first vinyl-apperance from smycken after most notably a cassette on night people and a cd-r on psychic malmö (both released in 2009). 4 tracks of hazy and dreamy music, pushing forward everything towards a more refined pop-sound but without loosing it's initial fonal-esque psychedelic blurs and almost folky undertones. current popular culture is being demolished and embraced at the same time. tracks like marble slabz will have you, with a big smile, asking yourself what the fuck just happened and the closer mysterious moonlight is the closest thing we have come to a ballad in the rtb discography since... well, ever.
mastered by viktor ottosson. 275 copies. blue vinyl.

mike shiflet - "llanos" cd (no label) $9.00
llanos is an album not only about late summer evenings spent in tall grass, but also the collision of worlds and tangled webs of memories. noise, drones and musical elements combine in a futile effort to recreate a perfect moment in a perfect world that could not have possibly existed. the real and the imagined have blurred. the noise and the music have made peace.
*definitely one of my favorite discs i've heard all year. its a must hear*

chemtrails & steel dangerous -
"galvanized dextrose" cs (cylindrical habitat modules) $8.00
unearthed collaboration of jeff host and doug gent (moth cock) jamming university synths, long before they were chemtrails or steel dangerous. absurd, flowing synthesis with a defined morton subotnick-style nonesuch vibe. around every corner there's a bizarre surprise. i've tried falling asleep with this on but it just doesn't happen, at least once a minute i'd open my eyes in confusion just to make sure the sounds weren't coming from that bizarre purgatory between consciousness and sleep. this recording leaps around and covers more ground in 46 minutes than i could in weeks. one of the weirdest modules yet. essential! edition of 70 with big color covers and sprayed, "dying printer"-style labels.
++
quicksails -
"madison lakes" cs (cylindrical habitat modules) $8.00
the new project everyone should be most excited about. ben billington (tiger hatchery, druids of huge etc.) goes solo and lays down the most unique yet logical scattering of sounds i've heard in a while. analog synth, percussion, synth that sounds like percussion, percussion that sounds like synth (??????), blended into a fine powder and sprinkled onto an endless plain of 90's capri sun-style mercury slime. the whole recording is sprinkled with tiny pinpricks and nuances of the aforementioned synth/percussion/??????? that craft a completely fresh, insanely addictive sound-zone that sounds like every raindrop in the sky solidifying and turning into solid gold. the whole tape culminates with (easily) jam of the year, "realization", full of warm, "insightful" sounding synths and perfectly placed popol vuh-style cymbal crashes. i can't help but feel like this is the music for now, it just feels right. somebody needs to do an lp for this guy asap. weird full-color covers and painted labels in a "get the word out" edition of 100!

headboggle - "ciat demo as rhapsodized" cs (cylindrical habitat modules) $8.00
not to play favorites, but this has to be the heaviest hitter from this here batch. after two back-to-back head boggle gigs this summer, i am saying with confidence that mr. gedalecia is by far the most underrated jammer in the game. he's been beeping and screeching lightyears above the ozone layer for long enough that it's not even going over everybody's head anymore, it's just bouncing around in the outer limits waiting for some extraterrestrials to grip it and eat, sleep and pray to it. a perfect set of tones that sounds like five thousand phantom patches tumbling down the stairs with unheard-of and amazing "haunted ballroom" style free piano, all of it crashing gloriously at the bottom, into your brain. trademark headboggle synth-squeaks and whistles drill their way through cascading "black tie affair" piano shred and unexpectedly beautiful mandolin plucking. sounds like sitting in the present trying to tune into radio 1000 years from now and realizing that it sounds better in between stations. after the endless circuitry-scrape of the first side, side b holds a recent live set with a similar vibe. minimal crowd chatter sounds completely in-place and purposeful, as if it were actually part of the jam. like always with headboggle, you have no idea what's going on, but the confusion is what keeps you coming back. absolutely arresting and mind-warping music. the best of the best!!!! edition of 100 with extra confusing art, trans blue tapes with full-color labels.

mike shiflet - "gutter divas" cs (dokuro) $6.00
dokuro is very glad to host another pearl from ohio electronic magister mike shiflet.
gutter divas is a clattery tide of sonic detritus and rotating waves in escalation, a formidable example of sound that become a tactile experience.

vales and minutiae - "split" cs (905 tapes) $6.00
vales has a gig picking up people who poop themselves from seedy motels and driving them around. makes for good stories in the middle of the day, but he tends to fry up my text usage and send my bill overboard. one time he got in touch with a story about a lady who's kid (or maybe grandkid, or maybe both??) suffered from a condition she called "the rammies". it was a good story, and he named the track on this split after it. solid choice. total ether-fragment vibes going down here. tones that s-board on the rings of saturn. minutiae is a superstar three-piece, kind of like that cartoon called pro-stars where michael jordan, wayne gretzky, and bo jackson fought crime. jeff astin (xiphiidae/housecraft) dunks it from the foul line, william giacchi (magic lantern/super minerals) boosts the stanley cup over his head, and phil french(super minerals/stunned records) knows best. bed time stories on cough syrup. (edition of 50)

black eagle child -
"born underwater" b/w "the arquebus" cs (avant archive) $6.00
composition has always been a difficult process. when i decided to stick close to my comfort zone and start building music from foundations of guitar, writing music became a little easier. before black eagle child reached this point, my composition process did not exist. mostly the result was failure, but from this lack of discipline also came a couple pieces i really felt proud of. here they are finally in an official production.

knit prism - "growing" cs (avant archive) $6.00
michael pouw's efforts as knit prism have already transported us to many lands—some familiar and others less so. here guitar chords issue forth on tape, floating lightly in the air, but also with enough heaviness to refract the light passing through. there is a certain haze about growing. mimicing the moods and incidences in our daily lives, pouw travels from one moment to the next, often with little transition in between. not wanting to be incongruently clear about this, all we can say is that the sounds on this recording are attributed to places of mystery and a certain 'other world' that so often exists in the realm of comedic drama. this is realism and comedy together. walk through the barrier of fog and step into a world in which the rules are unknown.
++
a. pushkin - "the figure" cs (avant archive) $6.00
has electronic music reached its pinnacle? the mainstream transition from analog to digital in the 1990s caused a shortage of analog equipment, but now analog is in a renaissance. the early part of the 2000s saw a race toward higher bpm and hyper-mutilated amen breaks, but all the while there have been analog warriors existing in the underground. alexey pushkin is an advocate for analog, and instead of making dubstep records or the fastest jungle 12" ever, he is creating worlds into which his listeners can retreat. as analog concept, alexey has given us a broad range of experiences—from walls of ambient sound to collections of vintage-inspired numbers to a trip through a real-life cityscape. the figure presents a. pushkin, and it is a portfolio of sorts. we get rich ambience, wild synthesizer manipulation, crisp field recordings, and now even infectious minimal house outings. electronic music exists simultaneously in the future and the past.
pigeons - "pigeons" cs (the curatorial club) $7.00
on the trail of their lunettes 7-inch on soft abuse and barely preceeding the release of si faustine on oesb, this collection of songs finds pigeons exploring their inner realm. originally intended to be a live release, tcc006 grew to include new songs (the intoxicating allure of "en rêve" and the luminous "masks"), as well as homages to some of their favorite songs (mark bolan's "life's a gas", dwight twilley's "looking for the magic" and jimmy page and del shannon's "in my time of sorrow.") the b-side is filled with a live set recorded in the dead of winter on the lower east side and showcases songs from the forthcoming si faustine.

the most definitive solo statement from this perispirit and ehnahre member. dirty oscillator destruction and blown out synth edited in that meticulous perispirit style. a recording of contrast. heavy use of dynamics. the loud and the soft. the pretty and the ugly. noise and tonality. these tracks take you different places. not a recording where you jump ahead a minute and the track sounds exactly the same as it did before. sometimes you’re allowed to relax but only briefly. it’s a busy world. no time for burnouts. view your reality through the eyes of mr. brazil.

ättestupa - "begraven mot norr" lp (release the bats) $21.00
north of the church, only the worst of mankind was buried. under the dark soil you could find people who had ended their own lives. murderers. thieves. here in the shadow, the poor souls were gathered for their last rest. begraven mot norr, the second album from ättestupa, is themed around funeral customs and death processions in the past centuries of rural sweden.
the first lp was described as a mix of folk tones, 70's german prog, noise and black metal, and via the att korsa den flod som kommer dränka oss alla tape (abisko) and 1867 12" (dnt), that mixture was refined. with begraven mot norr, ättestupa returns with their most accomplished and complex recording so far, a natural progression from änglamakerskan (their praised contribution to the utmarken compilation 10"). opening with an eerie violin over a rushing river, the bleak tone is immediately set. set to a backbone of monotonous drumming, guitars and organs take the freezing lead in the sinister arrangements. abrasive electronics intersects with field recordings and a sparse and elegant use of acoustic instruments. the chant-like vocals lure somewhere in the background, working as an instrument on it's own. often based on scrap metal junk abuse and tape loops, the droning interludes from their recent live sets are incorporated. the overall atmosphere is more melancholic, paving itself through different shades of grey with a calmer and more distinct sound than before.
recorded between summer 2009 and spring 2010. 2 tracks, 35 minutes. mastered by viktor ottosson. comes with a a1 poster.

yeast culture with achim wollscheid and all fours - "red light remixes" cs (incubator) $7.00
there was a performance by all fours (eric blevins with mark
schomburg), and another by achim wollscheid, and wollscheid's
computer clapper system was installed onto some of the cafe's
chairs, which were hung from the ceiling. the cafe's piano was
played anonymously from time to time. mark schomburg
recorded percussion, voice and field tapes around the cafe and
in atlanta to use in the live performance. the improvisational
playing of a door by achim wollscheid was conducted
separately. this tape mixes both live and field recordings with
additional sound sources. although five track titles are listed
below, this is one long work of audio production. many of the
sounds here were not heard at the performance, but were simply
preserved on tape. it was part of the show's concept that a
crossover existed between different performers and their
sounds. wollscheid's performance included immediate sound
samples of the other artists both live and from prior field
recordings, creating a generalized time frame. yeast culture
has included all total materials from these performances into a
remix with additional source tapes by all fours and allen
russell. both sides of this tape are the same.

cowards - "forgotten resonence" cd (semata productions) $10.00 new york city's cowards , made up of jesse allen (the cathode terror secretion, migrations in rust) and nick pace (diaphragm) are part of the red light district collective, in which a handful of ambitious musicians explore a wide swath of what is known as modern noise; groups such as yellow tears, halflings, the cathode terror secretion, among others.
with their debut 'forgotten resonance' cowards have stepped up the game in contemporary industrial/noise music. equally informed by harsh noise, industrial, musique concrete, black/death metal, world/ethnic, ambient and classical music 'forgotten resonance' is an album that is both physically and emotionally engaging the whole way through. the compositions are are extremely sectional and linear, they rely heavily on tension and release. heavy use of dynamics, thick clouds of natural and electronic sound, and dense tonal harmonic beds help to expose these emotions. a man looks at himself and he can see the apathy in his own life and his apathy towards the end times. this is music for the end times.

work/death - "tender comrades" cd (semata productions) $10.00 providence, rhode island based work/death, operated by scott reber, is an intersection of musique concrete, electro-acoustic improv and composition, field recording, drone, harsh noise, physical performance, and the pop song. as the name suggests it is a labor of determination, focus, and quality accumulating over a lifetime. for the past 10 years he has synthesized sounds of the 20th century. his multimodal composition process navigates effortlessly between the intellectualist avant garde and the noise underground with its violent removal of musical structures. paraphrasing reber himself, "david tudor or alvin lucier as prototype wall noise via early mapping of crunch, crumble, cracks, crackle, ruptures, space, and moving air that would later be central to the rita, macronympha."
each work/death release, previously on labels such as hospital, monorail trespassing, ekhein, ect. gives the listener an entry point to his exploration of a time, location, frequency or state of anxiety. 'tender comrades' his first official full length is his strongest statement yet. unapologetic harmonic/melodic moves surfacing through and being submerged by waves of white noise. 'tender comrades' is drenched in sweat, performed with piano, upright bass, guitar, machine, midi programming, cassette manipulation, synthesizer, his body, hiss, crackle, melody, hope and possibility. this is harsh noise composition, conceptual high volume, the aurality of negative space, the physicality of sound - filling rooms, bodies. work/death exemplifies the subtlety of pain and the intensity of tenderness. garbage in. garbage out.

owl head, wooden man/night music - "liftedness i" cs (cabin floor esoterica) $7.50
creaking basement prayers from a few sides of the dust era. owlhead, wooden man, otherwise known as shon mahoney (s. br. oak, soft peace, etc.) slips right into a long buzzing drone piece, full of half-heard layers and imagined howls, the subtle melody of a horn on the radio. a dream in dust, for sure. then he let's it ride a little easier on a simply folky song blown out and roaring in the most gentle way possible, building into a strange loop of misheard melody. the flip side sees a series of shorter cut works from night music's christopher kline (wooden veil, soft peace, etc.) tossing banjos, guitars, jaw harp, old electronics and whatever else he can find into an old trunk, shaking it up, and dumping it out. sounding like a television made of stones on the fritz during a storm, chopping up flooded gray static and deep woods fortune teller stories. in an edition of 50 painted-label tapes tied with thread to a seed packet designed by the artists and filled with cosmos flower seeds.

noveller - "wolf" 7" (ftam) $7.00 sarah lipstate (also of parts and labor and one umbrella) of brooklyn, ny has been creating incredibly beautiful works of solo guitar drone for years now under the moniker noveller, although it seems like people have just started to pay attention (which is a crying shame). on her very first 7" record, she pulls unreleased material both old an new. the a-side represents an earlier sound, extremely textural and completely unrestrained, shimmering the entire way through with the smallest hint of darkness seeping beneath. the b-side is brand new, showcasing the more subtle turn her work has taken as of late, working heavily with a building sense of cohesion and melody throughout the track.

noveller - "desert fires" cd (saffron recordings) $12.00 desert fires’ is noveller’s full-length follow-up to last year’s no fun debut ‘red rainbows’. the sounds on ‘desert fires’ express a compositional evolution from layered loop-based drone work to more expansive formal arrangements of swells, throbs, tones and shimmer. where ‘red rainbows’ presented an anthology of studies in technique—from early bedroom recordings to noveller’s first exploits in the studio—‘desert fires’ illustrates a refined, deliberate meditation on the physical relationship between lipstate and her electric guitar. handling the instrument as her muse, lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer.
opening track, “almost alright,” stakes claim to ground in territory charted by fripp & eno or synth-heavy contemporaries emeralds, and leads the listener into the spacious, sprawling landscape of ‘desert fires’. “kites calm desert fires” is a sandstorm of rich, percussive guitar, warm humming bass and swirling rhapsodic chimes. “toothnest (for chris habib)” arrives at an idyllic sonic plateau of windswept fuzz and tremolo, then charges blindly with a soaring guitar solo evocative of bagpipes triumphantly marking a return from battle. closing track “fades” is the precipitate of a fragile complexity of deeply sensual sonic reactions—physically pairing texture, air and chance with the strings of lipstate’s guitar—it exposes the emulsion of one’s ears to the light of noveller’s sounds.
having recently translated the studio recordings of ‘desert fires’ into live arrangements, lipstate has patiently nurtured the common pulse of musician and instrument into a seamless, organic enterprise fit for consumption from the stage. noveller tours the us and europe thru the summer and fall of 2010 in support of the saffron recordings release, ‘desert fires’.

spectre folk - "in the sparkin' age of the great white horse" cs (arbitrary signs) $7.00
"in the sparkin' age of the great white horse" is the new cassette
from spectre folk, nearly 50 minutes of psych-ish folk-leaning rock
fog that is destined to melt into your dashboard this summer.
the tracks are culled and clipped from the sessions that produced
spectre folk’s most recent lp, compass, blanket, lantern, mojo. here
in the sparking age, pete nolan’s mood seems, lighter and brighter –
there’s less mystic nursery hush and a much more saturated stain of
the pink-orange ice cream colors of a pacific sunset.
true to form, there are forlorn fingerpickers and some quiet, noisy
stretches that feel like a walk alone in the woods at night, but the
tape also finds nolan making organic noises with his noisemaking
machinery: a tube amp makes thundercloud sounds on a track that’s got
the hazy warmth of a summer day begging for a rainshower; synths
burble, ominously at first, then dissolve into the a sound like
passing cars on the highway, before a couple guitars, intertwined,
come in at a glacial gallop marching the tape along.
and the albums rockers show nolan’s increasing comfort with extended
form guitar solos that saunter into and out of wild crescendos and
murky valleys like it’s the easiest, most natural thing in the world
for the music to do.

talisman - "initiate into the mysteries" cs (stunned) $7.00
"early in 2007, mark ledoux and m. geddes gengras stepped into a philadelphia recording space for a week and simply tore it up together, performing a multi-instrumental alchemy with guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, glockenspiel, dulcimer, bells and drums. the result of this dive into free-shredding folk and alternate-scale acoustics was ‘initiate into the mysteries’ — the talisman duo’s one & only album first issued as a highly limited cdr on night goat records. stunned was fortunate to score one of these rare early editions, and ever since it has been a favorite jam no matter what time of day or what mood we’re in. now on its third birthday, this tragically-overlooked masterwork has been dusted off, re-edited, and re-mastered with care by the band. we’ve additionally transferred it to high bias chrome tape along with all new art design. let’s just say it’s about time. talisman’s skill in fusing cloaked twilight dirge with sun-blinded modal reverie is totally compelling, and displays some of the more technically-accomplished passages heard from either members’ inimitable output. let the mysteries resonate strong as ever with our renewed attention and this special second issuing. limited edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c43 tapes with double-sided color jcard and insert."

the steel cello is a remarkably resonant and sympathetic assemblage of cymbals and tuned steel rods that, once set into vibration, produces a huge variety of subtly shifting timbres and harmonic intervals. rich in enharmonic overtones, the evocative music occasionally sounds like it has been electronically modified. first release in over a decade, we are extremely proud to have these guys on the roster. for fans of organum and robert rutman.

asher - "interference" cs (semata productions) $6.00
"asher thal-nir has been releasing his own blend of minimal drone music for about 5 years on labels such as conv, leerraum [ ], mystery sea, and/oar and his own promising sourdine imprint - his recent collaborative work with jason kahn, which received critical acclaim, exposes asher's strengths as a collaborator and improviser, it's under the guise of 'composer' however where we see asher's true light shine through.
in a time of one chord organ drones, and feel good ambient music, what asher brings to the plate is most refreshing to say the least. these are not mediative drones, on the contrary - these two side long interpolations are rather uncomfortable; there is a definite claustrophobic feeling to the music, brought in part by the controlled usage of airplane engine hum, feedback and clever use of field recordings. tension seeps in and out at just the right times, the saturated tape hiss is constant, on what feels like the soundtrack to your miserable daily nine to five. on the surface static and constant, upon closer inspection one can see the mood shifts and dynamics for what they really are - a horrifying window into the end.

vic rawlings / liz tonne - "truck krone" cs (semata productions) $6.00
"vic rawlings and liz tonne have been working together for the better part of 2 decades, spanning various genres of music(s) including indie/art rock, country, and that nebulous nexus: "experimental". they continue to work together in the electroacoustic-improvisation octet the bsc and the undr quartet, both of which have been pushing the limits of extended technique and aesthetics for over a decade. one thing that both vic and liz have always brought to the table is an interest in experience and a lack of fear in the face of potentially uncomfortable or unsettling aesthetic territories. their distaste for comfort zones, "coolness", flash and the familiar have led some to refer to their work as alternately "frustrating," "harrowing," and/or "exhilarating." which adjective you choose depends on how far out on the plank you're willing to walk with them. but if you go the whole distance you realize the plank doesn't lead to shark-filled waters or a horrible void, but to a naked, (nearly hyper-)aware present.
vic's piece, "the middle of three days," occupies "classic vic territory": an unhurried pace which blurs the lines between intentional and arbitrary, "cracked" electronics, beautifully tarnished bowed tones, beautifully stretched out memory man sonorities and plenty of what-the-fuck elements (coughing, "five-oh," wind machine??). it ends as suddenly as it arrives following the classic show biz dictum, "leaves you wanting more."
liz's "b" is a tonal/character study of the title letter (in flattened form), showcasing liz' unique sense of song craft (or anti-song craft if you prefer). using timbral variations (mostly slight), flutters, and modulations, liz presents a shadowy, skewed version of standard song form where a very stripped down content is presented in nearly traditional repetitions. in a parallel world, someone is singing a standard with too much melisma. with "arsonist," this process is further distorted and fragmented towards abstraction, functioning almost as an extended coda or question mark.
vic and liz have appeared on numerous recordings for various ensembles and have collaborated with a who's who curriculum of improv heavy weights; surprisingly, this is the first solo release for both artists and it's a privilege to have it as part of our catalog.
